the story ...
Inspiration is a fickle thing. As far as a series of work goes, inspiration has eluded me for the past several years. Recently, however, while spending so much of my time outside gardening and photographing nature in all her splendor, I started building things again - structures for my own garden. Then, it happened ...
For the majority of my life my father has been quite chronically ill, and I have been his sole caretaker. Much of his medicine has come in these nifty brown and green glass bottles. Over the years I have saved a hundred+ of them, anticipating the day I would discover their ultimate destiny within the confines of my creative madness.
Then, I had a dream. Glass bottles in repetitive patterns formed within wooden structures towering from the ground, reflecting the sun and casting colors onto the flowers and plants below. Windows of glass bottles hanging from trees creating spaces of intrigue and beauty. When I awoke I was so excited I went immediately to work. Inspiration had come for my next series of exploration and creative process.
The piece “garden window” (above) is the first completed structure of the series. It was unveiled at the Untitled Artists of Nashville summer show “Multiple Origami” on June 13, 2008. It is currently installed in front of a window, adding color and allure to the walls of the room. Much like the stained glass windows of the ancient European cathedrals, this glass window is an expression of our times. Reuse, recycle, renew. Signs of our times, our current story. Now that is inspiration to me.
NOTE: I am open to accepting commissions for your particular space. Feel free to contact me with your request.
